Excerpt from Musical Forms: Vocal and Instrumental, Sacred and Secular It is a common remark that musical amateurs talk of different musical forms with a very vague and uncertain notion of their meaning. It cannot be denied that in this respect musical instruction is deficient, when compared, for instance, with the study of the different forms of poetry, respecting which, in general, our knowledge is far more precise and accurate. And yet our delightful musical art by no means owes its existence to mere accident and chance; many illustrious men have devoted their best energy and closest attention to the consolidation of that wonderfully organised structure which we may well be proud to recognise in musical writing. Neither can it be denied that the taste for music is innate in a greater number of people than that for painting, sculpture, and poetry; and it might almost be assumed that people sang before they spoke, and that for this reason Music may justly be called the oldest art, although in regard to development and perfection it is the most modern. The very general distribution of musical talent by bountiful nature amongst all classes of human society may in some measure account for the absence of technical knowledge of the different musical forms. An accurate acquaintance, however, with the essential conditions and the necessary structure of a certain piece, will undoubtedly tend to a just appreciation of the degree of merit it contains; and consequently will help to form a just estimate of its composer. My purpose is to explain, in this little book, the respective forms of Vocal and Instrumental Music, and at the same time to point out what composers have excelled in each of these forms.
